618 block of 15 patched with rouletted only selvage left. The issue of 1917 at first was pirnted on ready gummed paper from the engraved plates and rouletted. As with all stamp printing, there was som waste, sheets wer torn, soildedor otherwise rendered unfit for postage. In the early days of the printing, an effor t was made to salvage a portion of this waste. This was done by taking the undamaged panes of the spoiled sheets, perforating them by hand and fastening two of them together or fastening to a pain that was already rouletted and had been salvaged from a spoiled sheet. Thes patched up sheets were passed through with the regular stock and packed with the regular (rouletted) sheets; perhaps but one or perhaps more of the patched sheets in a package of 100. This was done only in the very beginning of the issue and these preforated stamps will have the same characteristics of ink, paper and gum as the early printing of the rouletted stamps. The 1c, 2c, 3c, 5c and 10c stamps were thus treated. These stamps are of precisely the same status as the perforated coil waste of the United States. Half of the perforated lower pane of a patched sheet; the upper pane was rouletted as can be seen by the rouletted margin still attached. It is doubtful if a sheet has bee preserved the the rouletted and perforated stamps still attached. $1500.
